01 / PROJECT SETTINGS
From the hull to the production floor.
Shape a workforce request around the environment, the phase of work and the skills each assignment needs.
Vessel construction & outfitting
Structural fabrication, assembly and onboard installation for new-build and refit work packages.
Typical focus
Hull fabrication · piping · cable installation · mechanical outfitting
Shipyards & waterfront infrastructure
Construction and modernization of the facilities that build, maintain and service vessels.
Typical focus
Dry docks · piers · shops · utilities · equipment foundations
Defense industrial base facilities
Industrial construction for defense manufacturers and the supplier facilities behind production.
Typical focus
Production buildings · fabrication plants · equipment installation · facility expansion
02 / SKILLED TRADES
A trade mix built around
the work package.
Define the craft, process, materials and experience your site requires.
Fabrication & welding
Shipfitters, structural welders, pipe welders and fabricators.
Specify material, process, position and the project’s practical test requirements.
Pipe & mechanical
Pipefitters, millwrights, machinists and mechanical trades.
Identify installation scope, machinery experience and system-specific work requirements.
Electrical & controls
Marine and industrial electricians, cable installers and instrumentation technicians.
Separate vessel outfitting from facility power, controls and commissioning support.
Rigging & installation
Riggers, ironworkers and equipment installation trades.
Define equipment, lift-support duties, work areas and task-specific qualifications.
Coatings & insulation
Industrial painters, blasters, insulators and sheet metal workers.
Identify surface preparation, coating systems, access conditions and finishing scope.
Field & technical support
Working foremen, field coordinators, QA/QC personnel and planners.
Set discipline experience, reporting needs and any required inspection credentials.
Discuss availability and project requirements with Fieldcraft. Trade categories describe staffing requests; individual qualifications and assignment suitability are confirmed for each role.
03 / WORKFORCE PLANNING
The schedule starts
before the first shift.
A shipyard assignment is shaped by more than a job title. Align the trade requirements, access process and work sequence before setting a mobilization date.
Bring the next phase into view.
Plan for the shift from fabrication to installation, then testing and turnover. Identify where the headcount grows, where specialist skills enter and where crews can step down.
01 / Scope the assignment
Site, vessel or facility; work package; headcount by craft; shifts; start dates; and expected duration.
02 / Align skills & site requirements
Experience, trade tests, credentials, orientation and access requirements supplied by the site or prime contractor.
03 / Agree the staffing plan
Review available candidates, engagement terms, travel arrangements and the schedule for bringing people onto the project.
04 / Coordinate each phase
Confirm reporting contacts, timekeeping, shift changes and the review points for extensions or demobilization.
ASSIGNMENT READINESS
Define the requirements.
Then confirm the fit.
Capture the requirements of the site, contract and assigned task during scoping, so the staffing conversation starts with the right information.
Trade capability
Relevant experience, process or equipment familiarity, practical tests and role-specific credentials.
Worksite preparation
Required orientation, PPE, task training and site procedures for the assigned work environment.
Access & onboarding
Badging, screening and any contract-specific eligibility or clearance requirements, as identified by the customer.
PROJECT QUESTIONS
Before you
build the crew.
Can a request cover both vessel work and facility construction?
Yes. Describe them as separate work packages with their own tasks, supervisors, trade requirements and start dates. This helps distinguish marine outfitting experience from the skills needed for industrial buildings, utilities or equipment installation.
Are qualifications the same for every assignment?
No. Welding processes, materials, trade tests, equipment experience and inspection credentials can vary by assignment. Provide the project’s requirements so candidate suitability can be reviewed against the actual scope.
How are site access and clearance requirements handled?
Include the site’s badging, screening and contract-specific requirements in the initial request. Access and any required clearances must be verified through the appropriate process before assignment; a trade qualification alone does not establish site eligibility.
Can I request people for a specific phase or shift?
Include the headcount by craft, shift pattern, planned start, duration and changes between phases. Fieldcraft can use that information to discuss availability and an appropriate staffing approach.
Where do tradespeople find opportunities?
Visit open jobs or register your trade experience. Openings, locations, travel arrangements and assignment requirements vary by project.
